オンライン英会話の宿題 裏山って英語で何ていうの？

前回のオンライン英会話の人はテンション低めで、かつ通信環境が悪いのか、僕のうんこ英語を差し引いてもレスポンスが遅く、沈黙長めでけっこうつらい思いをした。みじめな気持ちになりながらよく続けるなぁと思うが、もうみじめな気持ちでやりたくないというみじめドリブンで英語の学習を続けているのである。

あとTOEICの受験予約した。2/26のやつ。頑張る。

What is something that you did as a child even though your parents told you not to?

When I was a child, I often went to the nearby small mountain with my friends. We were forbidden to go there because it was too dangerous for small children. But we often went there because it was fun. We played hide-and-seek, climbed trees, sucked honey of flowers.

などと書いていて、面白くないからやめた。なんか子供の頃禁止されてたことあったっけなぁ……と思って検索してみたら、炭酸ジュースが出てきた。あったあった、なぜか、なぜかコーラを禁止されていた時期があった。骨が溶けるとかなんとか！多分親も忘れてると思う。コーラ禁止されていた伝説はウケる気がするから、これでいこう。

When I was a child, I was forbidden to drink coke. I don’t know why I was forbidden. Maybe it was because people believed that coke was bad. I remember my mother telling me that Coke melt my bones. I didn’t believe that. So I often drank coke in my friend’s house. I still don’t believe that.

However, at that time there were many people who said that soda melt our bones. I looked it up on the Internet, and found some people still say that now. I don’t know they really believes that. I drank a lot of soda and coke, but my bones don’t melt yet.

これまじでなんなんだろね。今でも言っている人いるらしくてワロタ。これ外国でも言われてるのかな。

裏山が言えねぇ

山の表現ができねぇ。mountainはでかい気がする。ドラえもんに裏山くらいのニュアンスなんだけれど……と思って検索してみたら、やっぱり悩まれていた。

なるほど、日本人は山に対する感度が高いのか……。こういうところで異文化を感じる。裏山も言えない英語なんて……。しかし考えてみると裏山って何が裏なんだろう。なんかこう、いつもの場所の裏にあるような感覚なんだけどな。そもそも裏に山がないのか、アメリカは。そうかも。

と思って最終兵器DeepLさんに聞いてみたら、backwoods が返ってきた。マジか？英和辞典で調べたら辺境地って出てきたんだけれど。別に辺境ではない。なんかアマゾンの奥地みたいなニュアンスにならん？

YouTubeのビデオを見てbとvの音の出し方を学べということだった。

……laboratoryて、またえらくピンポイントにくるなぁ。

After I graduated from university, I got a job as an engineer. My first job was to maintain a very big radar. The radar consisted of 1000 antennas. The radar was operated by university’s laboratory.

It was not a boring job, but I realized that I was not very interested in radar job. In addition, that radar was located in the countryside. I needed to live there. There was only one supermarket there. When that supermarket closed, it was very dark.

So I changed my job. I work as a software engineer and live in Tokyo now.
